SMALL PROGRAM. BIG IMPACT.

Our primary goals with the Healthy Eating Eco-Kitchen were to:

  • Provide quality healthy food education (and tastes);
  • Highlight what people are growing in Southern Ontario,and what vendors and markets are selling;
  • Engage people, build community and have fun sharing

Pre-Covid, the Healthy Eating Eco-Kitchen was a simple pop-up kitchen that ran on the farmers market days and offered samples. We showed people how to use local food as it became available at market or in the on-site gardens.

Volunteers prepared and served food or beverages from produce and herbs grown by our farmers market vendors or community gardeners. All food was vegan, gluten free and nut free. The kitchen also demonstrated how to cut food waste through composting and helped the market reduce waste by offering a community dishwashing station instead of using disposables. See recipes.

This program ran at the farmers market from 2013 -2019. Since then we've explored Mississauga’s Local Food System through interviews with folks. Learn about the interviews on our YouTube channel here.
